Founded in 1988 Bedfordshire Health supported the first meetings and start up funding came from the Lyn Perry Foundation The group was first called Positively Normal a reaction to the outrageous stigma experienced by people living with HIV AIDS during the early days of the epidemic As the group began to grow it was offered office space within Luton Drug Helpline and changed its name to Luton Body Positive with initial funding from Bedfordshire Social Services for a part time project worker Within two years Bedfordshire Body Positive was in its own premises in Cardiff Road We now rent a building in Lutons Union Street The strong and vocal activism of group members has regularly brought the group into conflict with certain sections of the statutory authority However the sense of empowerment amongst Beds BP members has proven too strong and the organisation continues to be an outstanding advocate for the participation and involvement of people living with HIV AIDS The group was an active members of the Network of Self-Help HIV AIDS Groups a consortium of over sixty Body Positive groups throughout the country Network ceased to operate as from March 2005 ">
