bbpositive: Counselling

WHY COUNSELLING
You may feel confused or unsure of yourself at certain times in your life.  Talking to a counselor may help you to make sense of your thoughts and feelings.  It may develop your confidence and help you control your own life.  Talking to a friend means talking to someone who needs you as much as you need them, that will colour their responses to you.  However, a counselor will be able to offer a more objective way of being with you, which is informed by the personal work they have done, coupled with their knowledge of psychological theory

WHAT ISSUES

Counselling can offer you the opportunity to reflect on your circumstances in a safe, supportive, caring and confidential environment.  It can enable you to access your inner resources and gain greater self awareness, promoting change through the exploration of your choices with an objective practitioner.

People come for counselling for many reasons and which may include:-

Loneliness

Anger

Isolation
Anxiety
Relationships
Sexuality
Decision making
Depression
Worry
Grief
Lack of meaning or direction
Self esteem
Confidence

These are examples of the issues people might want to talk about.  You are still welcome to ring for an appointment if you want to talk over an issue which is not on the list.

THE FORMAT OF THE SESSIONS

I see clients for 50 minute sessions which provide a good framework for one-to-one work. Most clients attend counselling once a week, but if you feel the need for more frequent sessions, this can be arranged.

Counselling requires a commitment. It can also be an investment for your future well being.
I offer a free assessment session.  I regard this first session as a one-off, during which time we have the opportunity to see whether  we feel able to work together.

Think your own thoughts
Be your own self
Discover
Let the plan for you
Grow within you
Complacency is the real danger
A degree of self-doubt
Is always the prelude
To excellence
What lies behind us
And what lies before us
Are tiny matters
Compared to what lies
Within us
Some people have a hundred
Acres
Of possibilities
And about half an acre
Under cultivation

(Anon)

There is no obligation to continue but, should we feel able to proceed, I suggest an initial contract of six sessions, followed by a review.  If longer term work would seem more appropriate, this is then arranged.

Concessions are sometimes negotiable in cases of genuine need.
ABOUT ME
I have been actively involved in counselling since 1991.  My way of working is informed by Carl Rogers, who pioneered the Person Centered Approach to Counselling.  It is based on the firm belief that each person carries within themselves the potential for self healing.  It is then the counselors task to provide a safe and accepting environment which offers clients the time and space to contact their thoughts and feelings, increase their levels of self awareness and find their own truths.
I offer therapeutic help to individuals on a private basis and I have extensive experience working with Bereavement and  HIV/AIDS.
I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to it's Code of Ethics and Practice.
